BELTON — A grand jury indicted a Nolanville man Wednesday who allegedly attempted to chop down a telephone pole.
Ryan Jefferson Heaver, 37, was charged with criminal mischief more than $1,500, a state jail felony.
Heaver is accused of taking an ax to a utility pole in Nolanville on June 27. About 7 p.m. the day of the incident, police received a report of a man "vigorously chopping" a utility pillar, an arrest affidavit stated.
Police located Heaver in the 300 block of North Sixth Street. When confronted with the allegation, he laughed at the officer and said, "So what?" according to the affidavit. Heaver was about halfway through chopping down the telephone pole.
The court document provided no explanation as to why Heaver attempted to cut down the telephone pole, and First Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe said he did not know why Heaver attacked the wooden structure either.
"The investigation was unable to determine why (Heaver) was chopping down the telephone pole," Bledsoe said.
The owner of the utility pole, Oncor Electric, estimated damages at $2,254. If convicted, Heaver could face up to two years in state jail.
